This quintessence of dust

What a piece of work is a man, how noble in reason, how

infinite in faculties, in form and moving how express and

admirable . . . . and yet,to me, what is this quintessence of dust?

Male Domination Art: Etienne: Forced Entry; Escape

When these images were published, they were illegal.  One bought them in pamphlet form in "dirty book stores," accompanied by furtive men elaborately not making eye contact even with the cashier, and carefully hiding them from view when one got home.  The secrecy was kinda thrilling.

Etienne was one of he first.  A spiritual forebear of the vast flood of erotic images now freely available on the Web, all over the world, to any five-year-old who cares to see them.  Some students at the University of California (there was only one campus, then) began it all, with a "free speech" movement, successful because we had a draft and an unpopular war.  We won more than we could have imagined.  Amazing change in a span of half-a-century.  Who can imagine what the next half-century will bring?

Note bene:  The rigidity of the closet, half a century ago, made for some violent fantasies, which Etienne had the courage of manifest in art.  Don't know how folks in these days of openness and sexual freedom will react to them, but judging by some of the images I see on the Web, some few of you may like the imagined violence.
